Education
Guatemala statistics:
Population: 12.6 million
Rural Illiteracy: 44% men, 59% women
Average schooling for Indigenous population: 1.9 years
Located in the remote mountain village of Nueva Esperanza, a school was founded in 2001 at the invitation of community elders to assist repatriated Indigenous families with the educational development of their children. Currently IMEBAC, an educational cooperative, has 89 students at the intermediate level of which more than 90% graduate to go on to secondary education. Despite their isolation and lack of resources, community members have labored in partnership to construct an adequate infrastructure including earthquake-resistant classrooms and most recently a library to serve future generations of the region.
Staffed by Guatemalan teachers and international volunteers, the school emphasizes a value-based curriculum that envisions and challenges students to attain their rightful place in Guatemalan society.
