Sustainable Agricultural Development

Guatemala is a country of rich agricultural resources and yet extreme economic poverty, with 21% of the population subsisting off less than $1 a day. ALAS is committed to assisting rural populations in finding sustainable sources of agricultural income through integrating the most efficient of ancient Mayan farming practices with those of proven modern agricultural methods.

Alternative crops are made available to village members with a focus on finding viable markets that promote fair trade options. Presently, ALAS is researching and assisting with citrus farming applications, organic composting earthworm farming, alternative natural medicines, tilapia fish farming, small scale ostrich farming and also education in the maintenance of poultry, dairy cattle, pigs and rabbits. Our approach is practical and holistic, with hands-on assistance given for small commercial applications.
